All river levels (m), discharge estimates (m³/s, cumecs), activity suitability scores, and weather indicators provided by Riverable New Zealand are for informational and recreational planning purposes only.
Real-time telemetry from regional council hydrometric networks is provisional and subject to continuous sensor calibration, telemetry lags, and sudden environmental surges from alpine rainfall, snowmelt freshets, and hydro dam gate adjustments.
Always Exercise Outdoor Judgment
- Visual inspection of river rapids, rivermouth bars, and braided channels is mandatory before launching.
- Never enter high flood spates or rivers under active flood watches.
- Be mindful of cold water immersion shock in snow-fed South Island rivers.
- Always wear an appropriately fitted certified PFD / lifejacket.
- Practice Didymo biosecurity: Check, Clean, Dry gear between river catchments.
